Stepping Back Into the Tardis

I am a converted ‘New-Whovian’.

Sure there’s the nostalgia factor of the old doctors – the cheesy sets, the makeup, the kitsch, but after my first viewing of the updated series I have to say I can let all that go.

Please bear with me as I am very green at the newer series, but I’d like to make a few observations.  I started with the 6th season with Matt Smith as the doctor and my first impressions were not good.  I’m not sure if it was the way his appearance put me in mind a bit of Matt Frewer or the exaggerated effeminate gestures as he swanned about but I was hesitant to like him in the slightest.  That lasted for  about ten minutes.  I think it was when The Doctor starting being a bit more sarcastic and arrogant and a bit less spastic that I started to warm up to him.  Suddenly his flapping hands and wacky hair seemed like a smaller detail to what is really a very interesting way of portraying the character.

The aliens are awesome enough to clear away any residual hesitation, anyway.  For a television show (and a British one at that), the digital effects are very well done and the one alien that I’ve seen so far was eerier than I expected.    I hope to see more random critters the more I watch as I find I am a bit easy when it comes to monsters. I’ve been known sit through terrible writing and directing as long as the creature pay off is worth it.  It’s sordid, I know.

You know how it feels when you don’t have a good series in your life?  You wander from series to series, trying to fit in, looking for ‘the one’ like someone obsessively trolling a dating site.  After watching some ‘New Who’, I honestly feel like I used to when I returned from a promising first date.  I don’t want to jinx it, but maybe…just maybe….

Merridith, if you can, start with series 1 “Rose”…or at the very least, the first episode of Series 2. Don’t judge Nu Who on Series 6 – as that was not the strongest season of the new series.
